After much discussion, the IESA Board unanimously approved to cancel the regular season and IESA state series in the sports of boys and girls golf, boys baseball, girls softball, and boys and girls cross-country for the 2020-21 school year. There are no plans to try and re-schedule the activities or conduct them later in the school year in part due to if and when high schools in Illinois play their contests. Girls softball practice was scheduled to start July 27. The baseball and cross-country seasons were scheduled to start August 3. The Board delayed any decision on girls basketball. The first day of girls basketball practice is scheduled for August 31. The Board will meet again in late August to make a decision regarding girls basketball. No decisions regarding any other activities were made.

Mrs. Baker was nominated for the Wall of Fame by Mrs. Burks. Congratulations Mrs. Baker!! The year was 1988, and I was in seventh grade. I was turned around talking to another student, when I was told that I would be spending lunch in the office, since I couldn’t quit talking during class. Thus began my relationship with Mrs. Baker. A relationship that I have treasured ever since. Mrs. Baker worked for the Beecher City School District as a teacher for 37 years. She is still working for the district as a substitute teacher and helping with computer programs. She worked outside the classroom as the junior high cheerleading sponsor, the yearbook sponsor, the head teacher at the high school, the concession manager, the sponsor of the ECO Meet and Envirothon teams, and the senior sponsor for numerous trips. She coached volleyball and softball. She took tickets and covered games in the high school gym. In other words, she helped out whenever and wherever she could. For many of us, she is an inspiration and a positive role model. She inspired me to be a teacher. I wanted to be just like her. I wanted to teach, to laugh, and to interact with students in a positive way just like she did. I am not going to lie. Science was not my favorite class in high school. Who likes dissecting baby pigs? That is gross. But I did love Mrs. Baker’s classes. She made science fun and interesting. She made sure her students knew she cared about what was going on in their lives by asking questions and listening to answers. She had a positive impact on her students, and that’s what makes her a great teacher. When I first started working at Beecher City, she was one of the teachers I counted on for advice. She was a mentor to many teachers, and she truly cared about what was happening in our classrooms. She didn’t mind being interrupted to help someone else. She knew she was investing in the future of our school. Now that she has retired, I look forward to her visits at school. I don’t even mind the texts saying she is still in her pajamas and drinking coffee, while I have been at work for two hours. I look forward to a smile and a hug and talking about her grandkids. She went from being my teacher, to an inspiration, to a mentor, and finally to a friend. I am nominating Mrs. Baker for the Wall of Fame. She was and still is a huge part of Beecher City School District.
